Optimal health starts here.

The Functional Med Nutritionist is an integrative nutrition consultancy and private practice. I help individuals uncover the root of their symptoms through functional medicine approaches and come up with an individualized nutrition and lifestyle plan to achieve optimal health.

 What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine, a model of medicine that was birthed in 1990, varies from conventional medicine in many ways. Functional medicine is a personalized and evidence based approach that requires practitioners and patients to work together to figure out the underlying causes of disease in their body and how to return to optimal functioning. It places an emphasis on that person’s specific genetics, environment, and lifestyle factors and how all of this interacts to create their current health status. Often times, many labs will be ordered that are deemed unusual by conventional providers whom only order a yearly CBC/CMP. Individualized treatment protocols, which include diet, supplement, and lifestyle recommendations, then result in improved patient outcomes whereas conventional medical models tend to treat every patient the same and never ask why a symptom or condition has manifested.

Why is Functional Nutrition necessary?

Functional nutrition is necessary because the prevalence of complex chronic illnesses is rising exponentially. The pathogenesis of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, mental illnesses, and autoimmunity may be rooted in genetics, but diet and lifestyle are what determine if the genes are expressed or not (epigenetics). The current conventional medical model does not account for personalized genetics, or place an important enough emphasis on food or environmental toxicities and their abilities to change gene expression. By addressing toxicities and deficiencies, you are able to truly thrive and get the most out of your body.
